Not offered in the UK and shutting down on 17 November 2026, so there is little reason to start using it now.

Kenning's take

What it does

Opal is a Google Labs experiment that turns a plain-language description into an editable workflow and a hosted AI mini-app, chaining text, image and video prompts with tools such as web search. Apps can be edited in a visual editor or by chat and shared by link. Google will turn Opal off on 17 November 2026; after that date workflows stop running, though saved files stay in the user's Google Drive.

  • Builds a visual workflow from a plain-language description
  • Chains prompts, model calls and tools into multi-step flows
  • Edit by conversation, visual editor or both
  • Hosting included, apps shared by link
  • Gallery of starter apps to use or remix
  • Workflow files saved to a Google Drive Opal folder

Who it suits. People without coding skills who want to build and share small AI workflows before the service closes.

FAQ

Is Google Opal shutting down?

Yes. Google says the Opal service at opal.google.com will turn off on 17 November 2026, and workflows will no longer run after that date. Google points users to skills in Gemini and Google AI Studio instead, and existing Opal workflows will not move across automatically.

Will I lose my Opal apps when it closes?

Saved workflow files stay in the Opal folder in Google Drive and Google will not delete them, but they will no longer run. Prompts can still be copied out of the files with a text editor.

Is Opal available in the UK?

No. The United Kingdom is not on Google's list of countries where Opal is offered.

When was Opal released?

Google Labs launched Opal as a US-only public beta on 24 July 2025, and expanded it to more than 160 countries on 6 November 2025.
