How it scores

Usefulness
4/5

Turns notes, PDFs and lectures into quizzes quickly (Techpoint Africa hands-on, techpoint.africa/guide/gizmo-ai-review); individual reviewers say AI cards save time but medical students doubt their accuracy

Ease of use
4/5

Save My Exams found Gizmo and NotebookLM the easiest tools it tested (savemyexams.com/…/best-ai-flashcard-generator); user reviews says 'way easier to start with' than Anki; on iOS, Android and web in the UK

Value for money
3/5

Free tier keeps unlimited card creation but locks quizzing for 10 minutes after 15 mistakes (help.gizmo.ai/…/what-are-hearts); £155.22 a year (about £12.94 a month) is in the peer range but Save My Exams calls it one of the more expensive tools it tested; two cancellation complaints on a thin Trustpilot (makeheadway.com/blog/gizmo-app)

Privacy and trust
2/5

Privacy notice allows training on personal data with no opt-out described and shares study material with an AI supplier; App Store label shows ad tracking; age rules conflict between notice (13+) and terms (18+ or parental consent) (gizmo.ai/privacy, gizmo.ai/terms-and-conditions)

Momentum in 2026
5/5

$22M Series A in April 2026 and 13M+ learners (itbrief.co.uk); #13 in UK top free Education and #47 top grossing on 2026-10-10 (UK App Store chart)

Verdict

Gizmo builds flashcards and quizzes from uploaded notes, slides or a YouTube lecture in seconds, and students in user reviews find it far easier to start with than Anki. The free plan caps quiz mistakes at 15 hearts with a 10-minute lockout, and Unlimited costs £155.22 a year, which Save My Exams found pricier than most rivals it tested. Its privacy notice allows training on user data with no stated opt-out, and AI-made cards still need checking line by line.

Privacy note.

Ratings

What people say

individual reviewers who compare it with Anki say Gizmo is quicker to start and its AI cards save time, while Anki fans point out Anki is free and more controllable. Medical students question whether AI-made cards can be trusted, and one commenter says Gizmo has paid user reviews posters in the past, so glowing posts deserve suspicion. Store ratings (4.6-4.7 across 135,000+ reviews) sit well above a thin 3.1 Trustpilot score from six reviews, two of which mention cancellation trouble per Headway. X mentions in the past year were mostly marketing and chart-tracker posts, with no usable user opinions.

“Gizmo is way easier to start with. It feels more modern and the AI card generation saves a lot of time.”

“Gizmo had paid in the past posters and commenters in user reviews, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same tbh”

Press reviews

  • Save My Exams 2026-07-01

Hands-on test with AQA GCSE Biology notes: named best for understanding difficult concepts, flashcards made in under a minute and 'fast and accurate', but one of the more expensive tools tested and the free tier has cooldowns. Save My Exams is a UK revision publisher with its own flashcards, which it does not rank.

  • Techpoint Africa 2025-05-12

Two weeks of hands-on use, mostly free: worth trying on a tight schedule; quick at turning PDFs and videos into quizzes, but key features are paywalled, large files lag and there is no offline mode.

  • IT Brief UK 2026-04-15

News, not a review: $22M Series A led by Shine Capital, more than 13 million learners in 120+ countries, founded 2021 in London.

Privacy

Trains on your data
Yes, in some cases: the privacy notice says Gizmo 'may use your personal information to train the models behind the AI features you use', and study material is shared with an unnamed AI supplier. The UK App Store privacy label lists purchases, identifiers and usage data used to track users for third-party advertising

Age limit
Privacy notice: 13+, with facial age estimation that can suspend chat for suspected under-13s. Terms: 18+ or a parent/guardian must accept on the user's behalf. UK App Store rating 13+; Google Play PEGI 3. The terms say nothing about academic integrity or cheating

FAQ

Is Gizmo free?

Yes, with limits. Making cards and decks is free, but free quizzing stops for 10 minutes after 15 wrong answers and AI imports have a 20-minute wait. Gizmo Unlimited is weekly or yearly only; Save My Exams found £155.22 a year (£77.22 with the student discount) or £4.99 a week.

What age do you have to be to use Gizmo?

Gizmo's privacy notice says 13 or older and uses face-based age estimation to catch under-13s in chat. Its terms say users must be 18 or have a parent or guardian accept the terms for them. The UK App Store rates it 13+.

Is using Gizmo for GCSE, A-level or university work cheating?

Making flashcards and quizzes from one's own notes is revision, not cheating. Gizmo's terms say nothing about academic integrity, and its AI Tutor can help with homework, so school, exam-board and university rules on AI still apply to anything handed in.

Gizmo or Anki?

individual reviewers say Gizmo is easier to start and its AI makes cards quickly, while Anki is free and gives more control over scheduling. Gizmo can import Anki and Quizlet decks.

How do I cancel Gizmo Unlimited?

Subscriptions auto-renew weekly or yearly and deleting the Gizmo account does not cancel them. Cancel through the store or method used to subscribe.
