Mustafa Suleyman

Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI14

Mustafa Suleyman is the Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI. He co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and Inflection AI in 2022, and joined Microsoft in March 2024.12345

Suleyman told WIRED in 2024: "Emotional support is actually one of the things I first worked on as a 19-year-old, when I started a telephone counseling service." Microsoft AI's stated mission is to build state of the art AI models and create "humanist superintelligence for everyone".412

A start-up that Google bought

DeepMind began in 2010 with an interdisciplinary approach to building general AI systems. Suleyman founded it with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg. Google acquired the company in 2014. At DeepMind, Suleyman led the applied research and commercialisation work.346

WIRED noted that DeepMind built the superhuman Go program AlphaGo, which beat the world's best player in 2016. Suleyman left DeepMind in 2019.312

Pi and $1.3 billion

Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI in early 2022 with Karén Simonyan and Reid Hoffman. The company built Pi, which it called the world's first Personal Intelligence partner, and trained models such as Inflection-2.5. In June 2023 it announced $1.3 billion of funding.4519

Suleyman also wrote a book that autumn. The Coming Wave, published in September 2023, argues that AI will run businesses, produce unlimited digital content and operate core government services. Suleyman's site says Bill Gates called it his "favourite book about AI".4

Hired by Microsoft, with a regulator watching

In March 2024 Microsoft announced that Suleyman and Karén Simonyan were joining to form a new organisation called Microsoft AI. Suleyman became EVP and CEO, reporting to Satya Nadella. The Copilot, Bing and Edge teams, and the GenAI team, moved to report to Suleyman.2

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority looked at the hiring of Inflection staff and decided it was a relevant merger situation. On 4 September 2024 it cleared the deal, finding no realistic prospect of a substantial lessening of competition. Microsoft said: "We are pleased that after an investigation and review of the facts, the CMA has concluded that our hiring of Inflection employees raises no competition concerns." The US FTC was reported in June 2024 to be probing whether Microsoft structured the deal to avoid antitrust review, and no outcome was found.9101314

Against machines that act conscious

In 2024 Suleyman told WIRED: "AI companions now see what we see, hear what we hear, and speak in the same language that we use to communicate with one another." TED describes Suleyman's 2024 talk as proposing the metaphor of "a new digital species".1220

A year later Suleyman argued against AI that mimics consciousness. "I think that's so dangerous and so misguided that we need to take a declarative position against it right now." Suleyman also said: "AI still needs to be a companion." WIRED noted that this position seemed to contrast with those of many in AI who worry about AI welfare.11

Management complaints, and suits that name Microsoft

In August 2019 Bloomberg reported that DeepMind's co-founder had been placed on leave after controversy over some of the projects they led. In January 2021 Google and DeepMind confirmed that staff had raised concerns about Suleyman's management style and that an external lawyer had looked into them. They said Suleyman did professional development training and was not managing large teams, and declined to say what the investigation concluded. The Wall Street Journal, via CNBC, reported that Suleyman had most management duties removed after complaints of bullying, citing people familiar with the matter. Suleyman told the Journal: "I apologize unequivocally to those who were affected."78

Several US lawsuits name Microsoft, not Suleyman. In Bryant v. Microsoft, ChatGPT subscribers allege that Microsoft's agreement with OpenAI raised prices and worsened quality, and the complaint mentions Suleyman as head of Microsoft's AI division. On 28 September 2026 the court dismissed the Sherman Act claim with leave to amend and let the state-law claims proceed. Microsoft's position, per the order, is that the plaintiffs lack antitrust injury and must arbitrate.151617

Authors sued Microsoft for copyright infringement in Bird v. Microsoft in June 2025, and the court stayed the case in September 2025. In Doe v. GitHub, programmers sued GitHub, Microsoft and OpenAI over Copilot; in September 2026 the Ninth Circuit affirmed dismissal of the DMCA output claim and left two contract claims pending. At a Microsoft event in 2025, Suleyman acknowledged a protest about military contracts: "Thank you, I hear your protest".161718
