Alexandr Wang

Chief AI Officer at Meta1

Alexandr Wang is Chief AI Officer at Meta, which he joined in June 2025 after founding Scale AI, a company that built a data platform for machine learning. He started Scale in 2016 as a 19-year-old student at MIT, and never finished the degree.123459

Forbes estimated his net worth at $1 billion in 2025. The day Scale announced he was leaving for Meta, its board named a stand-in chief executive, Jason Droege. Wang kept a seat on the board.27

A teenager's data company

Scale says Wang studied artificial intelligence at MIT before dropping out. Earlier jobs, per the company, were as an algorithm developer at Hudson River Trading, a software engineer at Addepar and a technical lead at Quora. He and Lucy Guo started Scale in 2016.35

The pitch was that labelled data held AI back. Scale's own words for the mission were "to accelerate the development of AI applications". It announced its Series A with Accel in 2017 and raised $18 million in a Series B led by Index Ventures in August 2018. A year later came $100 million at a valuation of over $1 billion. Forbes had already put Wang on its 2018 30 Under 30 list for Enterprise Technology.6789

Data, compute and the Pentagon

In July 2023 Wang told the House Armed Services Committee that "The country that is able to most rapidly and effectively integrate new technology into warfighting wins."10

Two years later he gave TIME his theory of AI progress: "AI progress fundamentally relies on three pillars: data, compute and algorithms." Scale, he said, had treated data "with the respect that it deserves". He also said the models look smart from a distance, but "if you actually try to use it" the gaps show.14

Leaving Scale for Meta

Scale announced on 12 June 2025 that its founder was "joining Meta to work on Meta's AI efforts". Droege, the chief strategy officer, became interim chief executive. Wang stayed on the Scale board.2

Meta said nothing about money. Reuters, citing two unnamed sources, reported that Meta would take a 49% stake in Scale for $14.3 billion.20

By October 2025 Wang was signing Meta posts as Chief AI Officer. One, on how Meta approaches teen AI safety, carried his name beside that of Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram.1

Worker lawsuits and a labour inquiry at Scale

These cases concern Scale AI, the company, not Wang personally. In McKinney v. Scale AI, filed in San Francisco Superior Court in December 2024, former contributors alleged they had been misclassified as independent contractors and not paid wages. The defendants deny that. They agreed to pay $12.5 million, and a settlement-tracking site says a final approval hearing is due on 30 October 2026.1516

In Schuster v. Scale AI, filed in January 2025 in the Northern District of California, six contributors to the Outlier platform alleged negligence over exposure to disturbing content. A Scale spokesperson said the company planned "to defend ourselves vigorously". In August 2025 the judge moved the hearing on Scale's bid to force arbitration to 11 September. The outcome is1617

TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that the Department of Labor was investigating whether Scale complied with the Fair Labor Standards Act, and said the inquiry was not evidence of wrongdoing. Two months later it reported, citing an unnamed source, that the department had dropped it. Scale's spokesperson said "We're pleased with this update".1112

In June 2025 Business Insider reported that Scale had left client and contractor data in publicly accessible Google Docs, and found no sign of a breach. Scale said it was "conducting a thorough investigation" and had switched off public sharing from its systems.18

What LeCun said

Yann LeCun, Meta's former chief AI scientist, criticised Wang in a January 2026 interview with the Financial Times, reported by Windows Central. He called Wang young and inexperienced, and said: "You don't tell a researcher what to do. You certainly don't tell a researcher like me what to do." That is LeCun's opinion, not a finding, and no response from Wang or Meta was found.19
